RIP ‘Barefoot Diva’ Cesaria Evora.

Cesaria EvoraCesaria Evora, the Grammy-winning singer from Cape Verde who brought that nation’s morna music to a wide international audience, died today, her label Lusafrica reported. She was 70 years old.

Evora, who was known as the “Barefoot Diva” for her habit of performing without shoes, was born in 1941 on the Cape Verde island of Sao Vicente, off the coast of West Africa.

She began singing at the age of 16 in the local sailors’ taverns and recorded her first album in 1988, when she was 47. Nibs van der Spuy Live in Gauteng

Nibs van der SpuyInternationally renowned, guitarist, singer, songwriter Nibs van der Spuy will be performing 3 dates in Gauteng, kicking the dates of on Wednesday the 2nd of March. He has been touring the world with his brand of insightful acoustic guitar mastery and poignant lyrics over the last 4 years. Journalists from all over the globe and predominantly Europe have cited Nibs as a fresh voice in the Nu folk movement. With his virtuosic acoustic guitar style and mesmeric voice he has enchanted listeners from small intimate theatres to large festival stages. With the release of his latest offering, ‘A House across the River’, France’s leading newspaper ‘Liberation’, wrote a full page article on Nibs and back on the home front, Keith Tamkei from the Sunday Times, praised it with a rare 5 stars.

He is currently promoting the release of his first live DVD, ‘Live at the Vagabond Café’.

Released at the end of November last year, “Live at the Vagabond Café” was recorded over two magical nights in December 2009 and this almost 2 hour concert features Nibs in a beautiful intimate setting, tucked away in the luscious Kwa-Zulu North Coast.

The first part of the DVD features Nibs playing solo with material off all his 6 highly acclaimed albums, as well good friend Farryl Purkiss who guests on a heart rendering version of Hank William’s ‘Tramp on the Street’. In the second hour, longtime drummer/percussionist Gareth Gale joins Nibs for some riveting duo interaction. Filmed up close with three cameras and the audio sound digitally captured, this is the closest you get to experience an organic Nibs van der Spuy Concert first hand.

There is also a wonderful ‘Bonus’ section with an in depth interview with Nibs and two rare archival clips featuring Guy Buttery and Piers Faccini.

Farryl Purkiss wows international Private Practice viewers!

Farryl Purkiss2011 has brought a great start to the year for Farryl Purkiss as fans in the US are bombarding his social network fan pages after ‘Pennies In the Snow’ aired on major US TV Series Private Practice last week.

Taken from his SAMA-award winning album, “Fruitbats & Crows”, ‘Pennies In The Snow’ is the second single from Farryl Purkiss to be aired on Private Practice, but this time around US viewers have finally taken note of this great South African singer/songwriter as they show their support with posts on his facebook, Twitter and MySpace pages. Making a great impact with viewers, “Pennies In The Snow” was heard on the 6th of January 2011 on episode 11 of Season 4 of Private Practice.

Alexandra Patsavas – owner of Chop Shop Music Supervision – was instrumental in the placement of Farryl’s music on Private Practice. Alexandra and her staff at the Chop Shop have been placing music on TV shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Private Practice,” “Chuck,” “Gossip Girl,” “Rescue Me,” “Mad Men,” “Supernatural,” “FlashForward” as well as the feature films “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “The Gardener.”, and have placed international artists such as Snow Patrol, who achieved great success with their music on “Grey’s Anatomy”.
