PRANKSTER – Lay Me Down (2 nominations): BEST ALTERNATIVE MUSIC ALBUM: ENGLISH and BEST ALBUM PACKAGING
BOO! – The Three Of Us: BEST ALTERNATIVE MUSIC ALBUM: ENGLISH
LOUISE DAY – Swallowed By The City: BEST POP ALBUM: ENGLISH
For GREENHOUSE RECORDS, NIBS VAN DER SPUY’s First Live DVD “Live At The Vagabond Cafe” has been nominated for “BEST JAZZ/INSTRUMENTAL/POPULAR CLASSICAL DVD”!
PRANKSTER – Lay Me Down
PRANKSTER is talented musician and producer, Arnold Vermaak. “LAY ME DOWN” is his 2nd album and on this album he’s brought in a new partner in crime in the form of Tamsin MacCarthy, who featured as a guest vocalist on the previous album. MacCarthy is now a fully fledged member and co-composer.
On the new album the intention was always to create something darker, moodier and a little sultry. And that they did. The combination of mostly down tempo beats, electronica and jazz fused with soulful melody has resulted in a deliciously sexy listening experience.
The album features eleven tracks including the first single, “Don’t You Tell Me What To Do”, which scored a massive 86% hot when voted by the listeners of 5FM’s DJ Fresh on June 25 2010. The packaging was designed by Brandt Botes of The Jupiter Drawing Room Cape Town. The initial limited edition release contains heat sensitive ink on the front cover. Sticking the cover in the sunlight, in front of your heater or down your shirt (depending how hot you are) will reveal a sexy image. The music on this album is the older, yet wiser and more sexy sister to that of the music on “Bravo!”.
BOO! – The Three Of US
2010 saw BOO! emerge again with a change in wardrobe and drummers with Riaan van Rensburg picking up the sticks on drums. The band set up camp in Amsterdam, The Netherlands early in 2010 to record the new album “THE THREE OF US“. Before releasing with SEED MUSIC, the album was remixed by Neal Snyman with audio approval of award-winning producer Theo Crous (Parlotones, Prime Circle, etc) and remastered by Jonathan Crossley.
The remixed and remastered “THE THREE OF US” album was released by Seed in early October 2010 followed by a spectacular launch at Montecasino on October 15, 2010. The album has already spawned the hit singles “The Three of Us” and “To Do Today” and March 2011 delivered BOO!tiful news as Chris Chameleon reached the Semi-Finals of the 2010 International Songwriting Competition (ISC) for his songwriting excellence with the single “The Lonely Hearts Club“. BOO!’s “The Three Of Us” album was entered into the AAA (Adult Album Alternative) category and “The Lonely Hearts Club” was a judges favourite. This is the second time Chris has reached the semi-finals in the ISC, the first time being back in 2006 when Chris was a Semi-Finalist for his song “Anywhere”.
With a SAMA nomination for “Best Alternative Music Album: English”, 2011 is definitely showing itself to be the year of the BOO!
LOUISE DAY – Swallowed By The City
Cape Town-based Louise Day, released her first full length debut album “Swallowed By The City” in September 2010.
Her much-anticipated debut album “Swallowed By The City” was produced by production heavyweight, Theo Crous (Parlotones, Prime Circle, Louise Carver, Flat Stanley, The Dirty Skirts), and features 11 Original Songs, all written by Louise.
The first single “Swallowed By The City”, the title track from the album, is a strong pop/rock track with radio stations and DJ’s nationwide loving the single. Seeing playlist success on some of the biggest Radio Stations, it’s just a matter of time before we see Louise Day make her way up the Charts. Other great songs on the album include “Chasing The Wind” a powerful ballad, “Sinner” an energetic driven rock track, “Lucky” a hauntingly beautiful love song and “Addict”, which was used by Aston Martin as a theme song.
Louise Day Shares the “BEST POP ALBUM: ENGLISH” SAMA nomination with an impressive list of nominees, a nomination she can be very proud of!
NIBS VAN DER SPUY – Live At The Vagabond Cafe
Released in November last year, “Live at the Vagabond Café” was recorded over two magical nights in December 2009 and this almost 2 hour concert features Nibs in a beautiful intimate setting, tucked away in the luscious Kwa-Zulu North Coast.
The first part of the DVD features Nibs playing solo with material off all his 6 highly acclaimed albums, as well good friend Farryl Purkiss who guests on a heart rendering version of Hank William’s ‘Tramp on the Street’. In the second hour, longtime drummer/percussionist Gareth Gale joins Nibs for some riveting duo interaction. Filmed up close with three cameras and the audio sound digitally captured, this is the closest you get to experience an organic Nibs van der Spuy Concert first hand.
There is also a wonderful ‘Bonus’ section with an in depth interview with Nibs and two rare archival clips featuring Guy Buttery and Piers Faccini.
